Being diagnosed with cancer can often lead to feelings of isolation and displacement. Support of family members and loved ones cannot be taken for granted, but without their own first-hand experience of cancer they may not be able to offer the understanding that you need. Cancer support groups can provide invaluable spaces for people with similar experiences to come together and find a sense of belonging.
Support groups offer a space for conversations to flow away from the pressures of the outside world. They allow individuals to talk through their emotions amongst those who understand, without fear of judgement. These groups have been found to reduce stress and anxiety, and give a sense of control over what may otherwise feel overwhelming. Questions to practical problems can be tackled with the help of others who may have gone through the same, or professionals who can advise on solutions. Side effects of treatments may be discussed, or perhaps information on alternate doctors and different options.

Support groups can be run in various ways, from professionals leading conversations to informal chats amongst peers. Finding the right one for you is an important step in the process, and you may find your needs change over time.
If you are considering joining a cancer support group, you might have questions for the contact point before attending:
- Who leads the group?
- Where and when does the group meet?
- What is the structure of the meetings?
- Who attends the group (survivors, family members, ages)?
- Does everyone have to speak, or can I just listen?
Support groups may meet online or in person at local hospitals, community facilities or cancer centres, such as our own Leveson Centre.

These groups are made to benefit you. If you do not find yourself better off after attending meetings, it may be that support groups do not align with your needs, or you just haven’t found the right one yet. Whatever the answer, at York Against Cancer we are here to facilitate you with the best support we can – from connecting you with local support groups to simply offering you a safe space to sit with a cup of tea in The Leveson Centre.
